When a commercial swimming pool begins showing cracks, leaks, rough surfaces, staining, or repeated maintenance problems, facility owners have more options than simply replastering or repainting. A PVC pool membrane can provide a watertight interior surface while allowing an aging pool shell to remain in service.
At RenoSys, we have specialized in commercial aquatic renovation since 1987, and our 60 mil reinforced PVC pool membrane is one of the systems we use to restore aging commercial pools. We have seen firsthand that the right membrane is about much more than giving a pool a new appearance. It can address water loss, surface deterioration, maintenance demands, and downtime while giving the facility a durable new interior.
Read along to find out how much a commercial pool liner can enhance your aquatics facility.
What Is a PVC Pool Membrane?
A PVC pool membrane is a reinforced, commercial-grade waterproof membrane installed over the interior of a swimming pool. Rather than functioning as a thin coating that simply covers the existing surface, the membrane creates a continuous waterproof barrier between the pool water and the underlying structure.
Our RenoSys membrane is a 60 mil reinforced and textured PVC system. The material is constructed with PVC bonded around a polyester reinforcement and is heat welded during installation to create watertight seams. The finished surface is designed to be nonabrasive, slip resistant, and relatively easy to maintain.
The distinction between a commercial pool membrane and a residential vinyl pool liner is important. Commercial aquatic facilities place significantly greater demands on their pool interiors, including high swimmer traffic, continuous water exposure, chemical treatment, and frequent cleaning. A commercial membrane system is designed around those conditions rather than residential pool use.
Why 60 Mil Matters in a Commercial Pool
When facility managers begin researching a 60 mil pool membrane, the thickness is usually one of the first specifications they encounter. A mil is one-thousandth of an inch, so 60 mils is approximately 1.5 millimeters.
Thickness alone, however, doesn’t tell the entire story. The reinforcement, PVC formulation, surface texture, welding process, installation quality, and detailing around penetrations all contribute to the performance of the finished system.
That’s why we don’t look at a commercial pool membrane as simply a sheet of PVC. We look at the complete system. The membrane needs to be properly fitted to the pool, securely terminated, and heat welded so the seams form a continuous watertight surface.
Reinforcement Adds Durability
The reinforcement within a commercial membrane helps the material withstand the physical demands placed on a pool interior. Commercial facilities can experience thousands of swimmer interactions, equipment contact, cleaning activity, and ongoing exposure to water and treatment chemicals.
Our 60 mil membrane uses reinforced construction specifically for public and commercial pool applications. That makes it fundamentally different from treating an existing pool surface with a conventional paint or coating.
Texture Is Part of the Design
A commercial swimming pool surface also needs to perform underfoot. Our PVC membrane is manufactured with textured surfaces designed to provide slip resistance while remaining comfortable for swimmers.
We can also provide different colors and textures depending on the application, including high-friction options for areas such as steps, targets, lane markings, and other designated surfaces. Custom PVC logos and markings can also be incorporated into the finished pool.
What Problems Can a Commercial Pool Membrane Address?
One of the biggest reasons we see facility owners consider a commercial pool liner is that the existing pool interior has become a recurring maintenance problem.
Cracking, water loss, rough plaster, staining, deteriorating coatings, and repeated patching can all signal that the existing finish has reached the point where another short-term repair may not make sense. A PVC membrane approaches the problem differently by creating a new waterproof interior rather than simply repairing individual defects.
Water Loss and Leaks
Water loss can be one of the most frustrating problems for a commercial facility. A deteriorated pool surface or compromised structure can allow water to escape, creating additional operational and maintenance concerns.
A properly installed PVC membrane provides a continuous waterproof barrier across the pool interior. At RenoSys, we heat weld the membrane seams and detail penetrations with appropriate flanges and components to create a watertight system. Our current membrane warranty covers you for 10 years.
It is important to distinguish that warranty period from expected service life. Actual membrane service life varies depending on usage, climate, care, and facility conditions. However, we’ve seen our membranes add 10-15+ years of new life to a commercial pool.
Rough or Deteriorating Pool Surfaces
Plaster and other traditional pool finishes can become rough, stained, cracked, or otherwise difficult to maintain as they age. For a facility that is operating every day, repeatedly addressing those problems can become a cycle of maintenance and downtime.
A PVC membrane provides a new, consistent interior surface without requiring the facility to completely replace the existing pool structure. In the right application, that can make renovation significantly more practical than pursuing a complete reconstruction.
How Is a 60 Mil PVC Pool Membrane Installed?
A quality swimming pool membrane installation is much more involved than simply rolling material into an empty pool. The existing structure needs to be evaluated and prepared before the membrane is installed.
At RenoSys, our typical process includes preparing the pool surface as needed, installing an appropriate geotextile felt underlayment where required, positioning and securing the membrane, heat welding seams, detailing penetrations with flanges, and completing markings or logos before the pool is filled. The exact preparation depends on the condition and construction of the existing pool.
The welding process is particularly important. Individual membrane sections are joined together in the field, creating a continuous waterproof surface. That means installation workmanship is just as important as the membrane specification itself.
The Existing Pool Structure Still Matters
A PVC membrane can address many surface and water-containment problems, but it isn’t a substitute for evaluating the underlying pool structure.
For example, RenoSys requires sound concrete for attachment, and deteriorated areas around penetrations need to be addressed before installation.
This is why we recommend starting a commercial pool renovation with an evaluation rather than assuming that a particular product is automatically the answer. We need to understand what we’re working with before determining how the membrane should be installed.
How a PVC Pool Membrane Compares With Traditional Renovation
For many aging commercial pools, the decision eventually comes down to whether to continue maintaining the existing finish or install a more comprehensive interior system.
Painting can provide a relatively simple cosmetic refresh, but it requires recurring recoating. Plaster can provide a traditional pool finish but may eventually become rough, stained, cracked, or require resurfacing. A PVC membrane takes a different approach by becoming the new waterproof interior of the pool.
That’s one reason we describe our membrane as a renovation system rather than simply another pool finish. The objective isn’t just to make an old pool look better. We want to create an interior that addresses the problems the facility is actually experiencing.
Where Commercial PVC Membranes Make Sense
A commercial pool membrane can be used across a wide range of aquatic facilities and pool configurations. We work with facilities where the existing structure, rather than the entire pool vessel, is still a viable foundation for renovation.
That can include municipal aquatic centers, YMCAs, schools and universities, hotels, competitive swimming facilities, recreation centers, therapy pools, and other public or commercial aquatic environments.
The size of the pool isn’t necessarily the deciding factor, either. RenoSys has installed PVC membrane systems in large commercial facilities, including Olympic-sized pools. Because the material is custom fabricated and installed for the individual pool, the system can accommodate different dimensions and configurations.
What Should Facility Managers Look for in a Commercial Pool Liner?
Not every PVC pool liner should be evaluated solely on price. When reviewing a potential commercial membrane project, look at the complete system and the company behind it.
First, you want to know that the material is actually designed for commercial aquatic applications. Then, be sure to look at reinforcement, thickness, texture, seam-welding procedures, termination details, penetrations, installation experience, warranty coverage, and the condition of the existing pool shell.
Installation experience is particularly important. A membrane can be an excellent product, but the finished system still depends on proper preparation, fabrication, welding, detailing, and quality control.
That’s one of the reasons RenoSys has remained focused on commercial aquatics rather than treating commercial pools as an extension of residential pool work. Our current operations are centered around public and commercial swimming pools, and our membrane system is specifically designed around those applications.
Why We Use a 60 Mil PVC Pool Membrane at RenoSys
Here at RenoSys, we believe a commercial pool renovation should solve problems rather than simply postpone them.
Our 60 mil PVC membrane gives us a way to create a watertight, durable, slip-resistant interior while working with an existing pool structure. It can help facilities move away from recurring patching, painting, and surface maintenance and toward a more predictable long-term solution. The membrane is also available in multiple colors and textures, with options for custom logos and pool markings.
Just as importantly, we don’t approach every pool with a one-size-fits-all installation. We evaluate the existing conditions, determine what preparation is necessary, and build the membrane system around the specific pool. Depending on the project, that can make renovation substantially less disruptive than removing and rebuilding an entire pool structure.
Is a 60 Mil PVC Pool Membrane Right for Your Facility?
If your commercial pool is dealing with recurring leaks, deteriorating surfaces, rough plaster, staining, or increasing maintenance demands, a 60 mil PVC pool membrane is worth evaluating alongside traditional renovation options.
The right solution ultimately depends on the condition of the existing pool, the facility’s operating requirements, the desired project timeline, and the long-term goals of the owner. A membrane isn’t a universal answer for every pool, but when the existing structure is suitable for renovation, it can provide a fundamentally different approach to restoring the facility.
At RenoSys, that’s how we approach every project. We don’t just look at the surface we’re replacing. We look at the pool, the facility, and what the owner needs that pool to deliver for years to come. With more than three decades focused on commercial aquatics and over 9,500 commercial membrane installations, our goal is to provide a pool interior built around durability, water containment, easier maintenance, and long-term performance.
